The Fort Institute (TFI)
Raising ethical, innovative, and transformational leaders from and for Africa through collaborative technology-driven learning—guided by pedagogical excellence aligned with global standards for sustainable impact—is at the heart of The Fort Institute’s (TFI) mission. Established in 2022, TFI represents the natural progression of Leaders Fort Company’s (2020-2022) pioneering work, now elevated to a nonprofit organisation with amplified impact and renewed commitment to leadership development.
Our vision is an Africa led by ethical, entrepreneurial leaders. Our mission is to develop leaders through innovative education, inclusivity, governance enhancement, and impactful scaling.
The Fort Institute's mission is anchored in four interconnected pillars:
1. Reimagining Education: Revolutionising learning through innovative, relevant, and future-focused curricula, pedagogies, and technologies.
2. Catalysing Inclusivity: Leveraging inclusive technologies and accessible programmes to amplify the voices and potential of historically excluded groups, including people with disabilities, women, and rural communities.
3. Enhancing Governance: Building transformative governance capacities in African youth, prioritising transparency, accountability, citizen participation, and inclusive decision-making for sustainable development and prosperity.
4. Scaling Impact: Harnessing low-cost technologies, collaborative partnerships, and disruptive learning models to drive sustainable development and transformative change across Africa, maximising impact while minimising costs.
Our theory of change is rooted in the following logic: If we reimagine education, catalyse inclusivity, enhance governance, and scale impact, then we develop visionary, ethical leaders driving sustainable development. This leads to evidence-based solutions, improved governance, and better quality of life for Africans, ultimately resulting in a thriving, self-led, and prosperous Africa.
By 2030, The Fort Institute aims to raise over 200,000 transformational leaders from and for Africa. We also strive to expand our reach to 1 million Africans by 2035, establish 10 partner institutions across Africa, and achieve a 95% programme completion rate.
So far, we have had a direct and indirect impact on over 15k young people of African origin across 15+ countries. Hosted 350+ graduates from cohort-styled virtual Leadership Development Courses (LDCs), led by trained alumni facilitators. Conducted 150+ structured leadership development and team-building sessions. Our fast-growing weekly leadership newsletter has garnered more than 26k reads across 18 countries and 2 US states. We have also expended hundreds of hours in volunteer work over the last 4+ years. Among these achievements, we have seen:
- 96% of alumni report improved leadership skills
- 97.83% of alumni who applied for leadership positions were successful
- 100% of female alumni who contested leadership positions emerged victorious
- Alumni have received prestigious awards, recognition and scholarships. Many others have secured jobs in top development organisations globally.
All these have been done FREE of charge and without external funding.
Our approach also integrates policy, community engagement, research, academia, and implementation, recognising the interconnectedness of these domains. We move beyond policy informing, embracing a holistic approach that incorporates rigorous analysis, strategic advocacy, and robust accountability measures. By doing so, we create an ecosystem where research and knowledge are leveraged to drive inclusive, evidence-based solutions, and where marginalised perspectives are brought to the forefront.
