Disasters’ Group

The Disasters Group aims to empower local communities and scale the GARRD model by Goonj. This cross-sectoral alliance brings together diverse entities for a coordinated, collaborative, and transformative approach to disaster response. Natural disasters are occurring with increasing frequency and severity due to climate change and conflict. And then there is the impact of conflicts on people and the consequences of mass migration. Disasters are generally predictable (if not exactly in scale and timing) and yet they are not well planned and the resources for recovery are constrained. All too often, the international response is late and insufficient for the needs of the people affected; with global funding pressures this situation will only get worse. The world understands that current methods are not effective and channelling more support locally is the way to go… the ‘localisation’ agenda. But little progress has been made. Our analysis shows this is due to lack of trust in the governance of localisation. The Catalyst Now Disasters Group has been working to mobilise social entrepreneurs to design a systemic change based on the vision and mission to: ‘Make Local Central’. The aim is to empower and equip local communities to increase their resilience and take control of their responses to disasters through education, systems, networks and processes. We have a pilot project outline based on East Africa and combining disaster management with a focus on improving agriculture and livelihoods and mobilising communities to be disaster resilient. We are looking for funding to implement and demonstrate our vision.

ISSTA will share experiences on challenges to sustainable development in Uganda and Africa in general. It will seek replication models of various response actions that network NSAs have implemented to circumvent inclusive growth challenges in which duty bearers have blocked progress on SDGs achievement in areas of climate justice, health justice, fair distribution of economic opportunities, human rights observance in a context of newly found oil and mineral wealth and the ensuant land grabbing.

Peopled is a social enterprise start-up with an ambitious goal to reduce inequality by connecting disadvantaged people with volunteers and donors supporting their cause. I trust that wonderful partnerships and collaboration could arise from the connection with peers in Catalyst 2030 who share a similar purpose. I also believe the connection with leaders who have longer experience in pursuing an impact on inequality and other SDGs could bring invaluable learning.

I believe that the platforms I've founded can be a powerful contributor to creating an enabling environment for social innovators and social entrepreneurs to flourish across Africa. Directly through providing an infrastructure solution to raise the funds needed for 1000's of impact focused projects at to provide evidence of impact to supports - enabling sustainable committed communities of funders. I attended the launch of AfricaForward Nov '23. I committed to specific deliverables from that.

By joining the Catalyst 2030 community, I hope to bring forward the importance of sustainable work in countries like Senegal where food security and daily lives have been adversely affected by climate change. I look forward to connecting with similar organizations and learn from them what works and what does not work. As a Co-Founder and Executive Director of Vibrant Voices Village Community Based Organization My motivation to be part of Catalyst 2030 stems from a deep commitment to sustainable development and a desire to contribute to systemic change on a global scale. Catalyst 2030 represents a unique platform where like-minded individuals and organizations collaborate to accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Being a part of this movement aligns perfectly with my passion for driving social impact and my experience in advocating for sustainable solutions in communities.
