The Missing Middle: Investing in What Holds the System Together
12-10-2026 14:00:00
Catalyst Now Week
Online/Virtual
English
We keep funding solutions. But the shared infrastructure that helps them connect, learn from one another, and grow together rarely gets funded. Building directly on a UNGA funder conversation, this session explores what becomes possible when philanthropy invests in that connective tissue, including how locally led solutions can reach greater scale without losing the local ownership that makes them effective.
How can philanthropy help locally led solutions reach scale without losing what makes them local?
Live interpretation will be available in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Arabic.
When Funders Move Together: What Collective Action Can Unlock
14-10-2026 14:00:00
Catalyst Now Week
Online/Virtual
English
Some of the biggest barriers to systems change sit beyond the reach of any one funder. When funders move together, they can do more than combine capital. They can align around shared needs, connect complementary efforts, bring different institutions and sectors into the same conversation, share lessons from what they are seeing across portfolios and geographies, and use their collective influence to remove barriers that affect many organisations at once. This session explores what becomes possible when philanthropy acts collectively around challenges that no single funder could address alone.
What can funders unlock together that none of them could achieve alone?
Live interpretation will be available in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Arabic.
Beyond the Grant: Putting Philanthropy’s Full Potential to Work
16-10-2026 14:00:00
Catalyst Now Week
Online/Virtual
English
Funding is only one of the assets philanthropy can bring to social change. Funders can also open doors to governments and businesses, convene actors who would otherwise not meet, connect social innovators to new partners, share lessons from working across different portfolios and geographies, and help effective approaches gain wider visibility and influence. This session asks how philanthropy can put those assets to work in response to what social innovators and ecosystems actually need.
What if the money is only one part of what philanthropy has to offer?
Live interpretation will be available in Spanish, French, Portuguese and Arabic.

The GA convenes virtually on the last Wednesday of the month, co-chaired by two leaders from the Governance Councils. All Catalyst Now members are welcome to join and to offer feedback on the movement’s direction and share updates on collaborations, advocacy efforts, and events.

Locally Led Collaborative Philanthropy
12-10-2026 15:00:00
Catalyst Now Week
Online/Virtual
English
Collaborative funding models are increasingly framed as vehicles for localization and power-shifting in philanthropy and development. Yet the language of trust-based, African-led collaboration has outpaced the infrastructure needed to make it real. Many collaboratives move money differently without changing who holds decision-making power, who bears risk, or who is accountable to whom — reproducing the same intermediary dynamics they were built to replace.
This session explores what it means to design collaborative funding models without capture.
Participants will work through:
What distinguishes a collaborative that redistributes decision-making power from one that redistributes only funding flows
What governance and accountability have to be true — structurally — for shared decision-making to hold under pressure
Where existing African-led collaboratives have built real enforcement or feedback mechanisms, and where the absence of one has quietly reintroduced old dynamics
The session will draw on SFP’s ongoing work on lack of accountability infrastructures as a central structural problem in the social sector, alongside the researchers and practitioners on collaborative funding in the room — aiming to leave participants with a working set of conditions for evaluating any collaborative model they’re part of, rather than a general endorsement of the collaborative approach itself.
