Safe Water Off-Grid: PaCT’s Bio-Sand Filters for Rural Uganda Schools

14-10-2026 12:00:00

English

Developed by PaCT in response to the cost, maintenance, and power constraints affecting water treatment options in rural Ugandan schools, this bio-sand filtration innovation uses gravity and locally available filtration materials to improve access to safe drinking water. This practical learning session will introduce the challenge that inspired the innovation, demonstrate how the system works, and explore what is required to establish and sustain it; from site and water-source considerations to local ownership, maintenance, monitoring, and water-quality assurance. Participants will also consider what they would need to assess before adapting a similar approach within their own context.
