AB3D: Burundian Association for Development, Democracy and Human Rights
AB3D (Burundian Association For Development, Democracy and Human Rights) is a Burundian civic organization working to strengthen citizen participation, inclusive governance, and sustainable development. We believe that communities are not merely beneficiaries of development efforts; they are essential actors in shaping the decisions, policies, and institutions that influence their future.
Founded in response to the growing need for greater civic engagement and accountability, AB3D works at the intersection of democracy, community empowerment, youth leadership, and environmental governance. Our mission is to create opportunities for citizens, particularly young people, women, and underserved communities, to engage constructively with public institutions and contribute to solutions for the challenges they face.
Burundi is a country with a young population, strong community traditions, and significant development potential. At the same time, many citizens remain excluded from decision-making processes that directly affect their daily lives. AB3D addresses this gap by facilitating dialogue, promoting civic education, supporting citizen-led initiatives, and strengthening collaboration between communities, civil society, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
Over the years, our work has evolved from civic participation initiatives to broader efforts that connect governance, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. We have supported community dialogues on public accountability, promoted youth participation in local governance, and facilitated multi-stakeholder discussions on climate resilience and environmental stewardship. Through these initiatives, we seek to build trust, encourage collective action, and ensure that local perspectives inform public policies and development strategies.
What distinguishes AB3D is our commitment to locally driven solutions. We recognize that lasting progress depends on empowering communities to identify priorities, voice concerns, and co-create responses alongside institutions and development partners. Rather than working for communities, we work with them, fostering ownership, collaboration, and long-term impact.
Our vision is a Burundi where active citizenship, inclusive institutions, and responsible leadership contribute to peaceful, resilient, and prosperous communities. By strengthening democratic participation and creating spaces for meaningful engagement, AB3D contributes to a future in which development is not only sustainable, but also shaped by the people it is intended to serve.
