Amani Foundation

Many families in northern Tanzania face difficult choices about their children’s welfare when economic means are insufficient. Families with limited livelihood options or those dependent on natural resource extraction for survival are particularly vulnerable. This reliance can inadvertently destabilize the very ecosystems they depend on, creating a cycle of poverty and environmental degradation that jeopardizes children’s futures. Amani Initiatives (ooNGO/R/7249), alongside its US-based partner, the Amani Foundation (36-4806201), tackles this complex challenge through a three-fold approach. First, we conduct critical research into the social consequences of human- ecosystem interactions, shedding light on how resource scarcity and ecosystem decline intensify poverty and family instability. Second, we create sustainable economic opportunities—through programs like the Livestock Exchange Programs—that empower parents to generate reliable incomes, lifting families out of poverty and enabling them to provide for their children. Third, we deliver tailored support to vulnerable children in these communities, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, and emotional care. Amani leads a transformative, family-centered approach to education for Tanzania’s most vulnerable children. Through our Families First Program, we provide educational support and social work services to keep children with their families. By addressing poverty, neglect, and lack of schooling, Amani is reshaping sustainable social good and economic mobility—we empower families and communities to create lasting change, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive and build a brighter future. This holistic model addresses both immediate family needs and long-term resilience, stabilizing households while promoting sustainable resource management. Through this approach, we champion an approach that combines research, community care, and economic opportunity to uplift families and preserve the natural resources they depend on.
