Asembo Skills for Hope (ASH)
Growing up in a fishing community in Kenya I witnessed firsthand challenges, like early pregnancies, forced marriages, HIV/AIDS, and domestic violence. Determined to make a difference, I founded Asembo Skills for Hope in 2020 while fully employed as a teacher in Rwanda, In 2022, I returned home to the full-time role of Executive Director.
Our specific goal is to break generational cycle of poverty in Asembo by equipping women with skills to prosper becoming economic independence.
We empower women to prosper by equipping them with vocational skills and providing comprehensive support on their journey to economic independence.
Skills Academy Program
Every year, we empower 30 women from Asembo through our transformative, year-long training program. From Monday to Friday, participants receive hands-on training in vocational, entrepreneurship, and life skills. Currently, we offer training in tailoring, with plans to introduce additional skills soon. Unlike technical colleges in the region, our program is taught in the local language, is easily accessible, free of charge, and accommodates mothers with young children. Our practical approach ensures that women gain valuable skills without needing any prior formal education. We rigorously evaluate each trainee’s progress to ensure that everyone graduates with the skills needed to start earning a life-changing income.
Graduate Success Program
We are committed to accompanying women all the way on their journey to success. We understand that progressing out of poverty is a long process and that creating transformative impact requires more than just skills training. That’s why graduation from our Skills Academy does not mark the end of our support, but just the beginning. We routinely check in with our graduates to monitor their progress and provide ongoing personalized business and life coaching. We offer microloans to help graduates obtain the equipment they need to run profitable businesses. Additionally, we organize social savings groups, enabling graduates to stay connected, support one another, and continue their financial growth.
Wellbeing Support Program
We recognize that the path to empowerment involves more than just economic obstacles. To help our participants navigate social and emotional challenges, we offer on-site counseling and facilitate safe spaces for sharing personal struggles. We provide education and support for those facing domestic violence, as well as family planning education and easy access to birth control. Our program includes activities to build self-confidence and foster strong bonds between participants. These initiatives ensure that participants have the strong social network
and knowledge to lead happy, healthy lives.
