Beekon

Beekon is developing beehives capable of withstanding flooding. Most beekeeping happens near agriculture, and most agriculture happens near bodies of water. Those bodies of water are becoming increasingly prone to flooding, and the 200 year old conventional beehive is incapable of withstanding that flooding into the future. Hurricanes Helene + Milton wiped out 200,000 managed beehives in a matter of days, and that alone is about $100M+ worth of bees and hives. That figure does not include the honey in those hives, and the economic value of the systems they support via pollination. Flooding is up 300 to 900 percent in the last 50 years alone, and continues to compound. Our mission at Beekon is to make pollination resilient. We're developing the world’s first modular, buoyant beehive made from recycled ocean plastic (HDPE) - it floats when floodwaters rise, protects multiple colonies at once, and enables beekeeping even in flood-prone regions. Our vision is to transform climate vulnerability into climate capability in regions that are threatened by extreme weather. Our work has been recognized with awards like the Jack Rosen Memorial Prize for Environmental Innovation, the Quantum Valley Investments Problem Prize, First Place in Waterloo's 2025 Climate Con, and the Engineer of the Future Award. We are actively seeking partnerships to deploy our hives where they are needed most. www.beekon.net

I bring apicultural + climate + engineering expertise across a wide array of geographies to the table, and hope to contribute a systems-level approach to climate adaptation. I would be honoured to share my experience and insights regarding agricultural innovation with others. From the community, I am looking for scaling partners and funding avenues that will help Beekon to deploy in the regions most threatened by flooding. I hope to collaborate with other initiatives that share overlap with our mission.
