Medical actions for Change

Our Mission Medical Actions for Change (MAC) is a medical organization created by health professionals who believe that good health care should be accessible, ethical, and respectful of people’s lived realities. Our work is rooted in medical practice, public health, and community engagement, with a strong focus on sexual, reproductive, and mental health. MAC was founded by alumni of Medical Students for Choice, and this background continues to shape our values. We are guided by medical ethics, scientific evidence, and a commitment to reducing preventable suffering, especially among women, girls, young people, and communities that face persistent barriers to care. Our mission is to contribute to better health outcomes by addressing preventable maternal complications, unintended pregnancies, and mental health challenges linked to social, economic, and health-related stress. We recognize that physical health and mental well-being are closely connected, and that people cannot fully thrive without support in both areas. We work closely with health professionals, medical students, universities, and community actors to strengthen skills, share knowledge, and improve access to accurate health information and quality services. Through training, research, and practical action, MAC supports patient-centered care that is respectful, informed, and responsive to real needs on the ground. We also work to reduce stigma and misinformation that often prevent people from seeking timely care. Our Vision We envision a society where everyone can access quality sexual, reproductive, and mental health services without fear, judgment, or unnecessary barriers. A society where women and girls are supported throughout their health journeys, and where preventable health complications are reduced through timely, ethical, and well-coordinated medical care. Medical Actions for Change aims to grow as a trusted medical and public health actor in Burundi and across francophone Africa. We seek to contribute to stronger health systems, better-informed communities, and a new generation of health professionals who combine technical competence with empathy, integrity, and social responsibility. At its core, MAC exists to support healthier individuals, more resilient communities, and health systems that truly serve the people they are meant to protect.
