Sarba Shanti Ayog (SSA)

Sarba Shanti Ayog (SSA) is a Kolkata-based non-profit organization committed to advancing sustainable livelihoods, enterprise development, and social equity through inclusive and community-driven approaches. For over four decades, SSA has empowered artisan groups, small producers, and women entrepreneurs to build resilient, self-sustaining enterprises that preserve traditional skills while adapting to contemporary markets. Established in 1978, SSA’s work lies at the intersection of livelihoods, sustainability, and social impact. The organization strengthens producer institutions, enhances skills, improves production systems, facilitates access to finance and technology, and enables meaningful participation in value chains. Its interventions are designed to generate lasting social and economic benefits for marginalized communities, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. SSA’s approach combines capacity building, institutional development, and market integration. It supports producer groups in areas such as design innovation, business planning, quality control, compliance, and digital literacy—helping them evolve from informal community-based units into professionally managed small enterprises. Increasingly, SSA incorporates environmentally responsible practices and climate-adaptive strategies to promote climate-resilient livelihoods in vulnerable regions, including the Himalayan belt and Eastern India. Collaboration is central to SSA’s philosophy. The organization partners with government departments, corporates, academic and research institutions, and international development agencies to design and implement livelihood and enterprise programs. These partnerships foster knowledge exchange, innovation, and the scaling up of successful models across diverse craft and rural sectors. SSA also works closely with its sister organization, Sasha Association for Craft Producers (Sasha)—a Fair Trade social enterprise and member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and Fair Trade Forum–India (FTF-I). While Sasha focuses on market access and business development, SSA builds the enabling ecosystem through institution strengthening, research, training, and policy advocacy to support the handmade and creative economy. Together, they create a unique ecosystem linking grassroots producers with sustainable markets through capacity development and fair, inclusive practices. SSA is also advancing digital transformation and affordable technology as drivers of social and economic empowerment. It implements programs that equip women and youth entrepreneurs with digital skills, improve production efficiency, and encourage environmentally responsible innovations in craft and enterprise development. Guided by the vision of “Transforming Skills into Prosperity,” SSA continues to build pathways for dignified livelihoods and equitable development. It strives to amplify the voices of small producers, nurture innovation rooted in cultural heritage, and demonstrate how craft-based and community enterprises can contribute to broader goals of sustainability and social justice. Through its expanding network of partners, funders, and collaborators, SSA invites engagement and co-creation toward resilient, inclusive, and climate-conscious livelihoods across India and beyond.

My motivation to be part of Catalyst Now comes from working closely with grassroots enterprises and seeing how collaboration can unlock real change. I value spaces where practitioners, funders, and system actors learn from each other and move from intent to action. Catalyst Now offers that kind of platform. It aligns with my work in strengthening craft-based livelihoods, climate-resilient enterprises, and women-led businesses. Being part of this network would help deepen partnerships, share practical learning, and contribute to solutions that are rooted in communities and built to last.
