Shamika

Shamika is an organization dedicated to supporting fertility and mental health, with a special focus on pregnancy risks and perinatal grief. The name "Shamika," meaning "to bloom" in Kirundi, symbolizes the organization's mission to help individuals and families grow, heal, and thrive, even through the most difficult times. Shamika was born out of Naomi Leila's personal tragedy. At eight months pregnant, Naomi and her husband were devastated to learn during a routine medical appointment that their first child, whom they had named Shamika Talia, had passed away. The loss thrust Naomi into an unknown world of long labor, natural contractions, the painful process of mourning, burial, and the harsh social stigma surrounding such a loss. In her community, this topic is often considered taboo, and Naomi found herself isolated in her grief. However, through conversations with other women who had experienced similar losses, Naomi began to realize the deep need for support and guidance in these challenging times. She saw the importance of opening up discussions about perinatal grief and how sharing experiences could help others heal. This led to the creation of Shamika, a safe space for women and families who are navigating the heartbreak of perinatal loss. Shamika works with people of all reproductive ages, offering essential information and professional support related to pregnancy, fertility, and emotional well-being. The organization provides educational resources on the risks of pregnancy, potential complications, and the psychological impacts that often accompany a pregnancy loss. Shamika aims to empower individuals with knowledge, helping them make informed decisions and find the support they need during pregnancy. One of Shamika’s primary focuses is perinatal grief. The loss of a child, whether during pregnancy or shortly after birth, can leave parents in a profound emotional and mental state of anguish. Shamika offers counseling and emotional support for families to help them navigate this painful journey. Naomi's own experience serves as a powerful catalyst for the organization’s commitment to providing compassionate care to those dealing with similar tragedies. The motto of Shamika—"We speak, we care, and we bloom"—captures the essence of the organization’s work. Shamika is committed to creating a supportive community where individuals can speak openly about their losses, where they can find care and healing, and where they are encouraged to bloom and grow despite the challenges they face. Shamika provides a platform for women to share their stories and find strength in each other. By addressing the taboo nature of perinatal grief and offering a space for healing, Shamika empowers individuals to navigate their journeys with dignity, understanding, and support.
