The Sparks Impact Fellowship

The Sparks Impact Fellowship is a social innovation talent development initiative designed to bridge the gap between young African graduates and the impact ecosystem. The programme provides a structured, financially viable pathway for graduates to gain critical skills and experience in social entrepreneurship and systems change. We place “Sparks” (high-potential, purpose-driven graduates) into 11-month roles with social enterprises, impact investors, and ecosystem intermediaries, and manage their training and professional development. Our immediate goals of placing Sparks into long-term employment in the ecosystem and equipping them for social entrepreneurship address key challenges in both youth employment and the social impact sector. South Africa faces a dual challenge: high youth unemployment (exceeding 45%) and a shortage of skilled, impact-driven professionals in social impact. Many young people aspire to work in social impact but lack the relevant skills, network, and financial security to enter the space. Simultaneously, impact organisations struggle to find and retain talent, as they lack the resources to recruit and train young professionals effectively, particularly for the constantly evolving work of systems change. Our innovation solves these challenges by integrating on-the-job experience with structured learning. Sparks work with partner organisations four days a week, while spending one day per week on a three-tiered learning programme: 1. Technical skills training in systems thinking, impact measurement, finance for social enterprises, and storytelling. This training is co-delivered with leading industry experts such as Relativ Impact, Sunshine Cinema and the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Sparks apply their learnings to the context of their placement organisation, thus engaging them in the strategy of their organisations by speaking to broad internal and external stakeholders. 2. As a human development-centred organisation, personal & professional skills development is a core focus. Sparks learn about work readiness, personal financial literacy, and various other subjects, supported by expert partners Taking Care of Business and the Job Journey, and by the Sparks team as coaches through their transition to work. 3. Sparks are encouraged to attend industry convenings broadly, and receive Learning Lunches hosted by the Sparks where experienced changemakers from across the ecosystem share their stories and guidance. To ensure financial sustainability, the programme operates under a cross-subsidisation social enterprise model. Partner organisations contribute a programme fee that covers a fair living wage for Sparks, training, and management support, with international partners paying a higher, market-adjusted amount. This model allows local social enterprises to access high-quality talent at a subsidised rate while ensuring graduates are fairly compensated. The programme selects graduates from student impact programmes, ensuring that Sparks demonstrate both capability and commitment to social impact. We measure success through employment outcomes and stakeholder feedback, tracking whether Sparks secure permanent roles in impact organisations or launch their own social ventures after the programme. By developing a pipeline of skilled, diverse, and passionate young professionals, The Sparks Impact Fellowship is transforming how talent is developed for the African impact economy, ensuring that the next generation of changemakers is well-equipped to tackle society’s most pressing challenges with a community-led, systems-minded approach.

My partner describes me as a "social impact ecosystem weaver" - connecting and collaborating in the impact world is what I love and what I am good at. Catalyst Now is exactly the type of community for this. I'm thrilled that this platform exists and I am looking forward to all the magic that follows!
