Vision Corps Initiative (VCI)

Vision Corps Initiative (VCI) is an international humanitarian and development non-profit organization registered in Kenya and Somalia. Headquartered in Mogadishu with a liaison office in Nairobi, VCI was founded in 2010 by Somali intellectuals as a direct response to the prolonged civil war, collapse of central governance, and systemic neglect of rural communities in Somalia. For over two decades, Somalia faced widespread insecurity, limited access to basic services, and the absence of a functioning national government. Urban areas received minimal support from a handful of institutions, while the majority rural population remained underserved. VCI emerged to address this gap, advocating for inclusive development and leveraging Somali cultural welfare systems that emphasize communal support and resilience. ? Vision Towards community-based sustainable development through improvement of their socio-economic well-being. ? Mission VCI is committed to support marginalized communities in the Greater Horn of Africa to sustainably improve their livelihoods through integrated food security, WASH, natural resource management, peace building and institutional building. VCI’s founding philosophy recognizes that sustainable development must be rooted in local culture and community solidarity. By promoting the connection between peace, resilience, and good governance, VCI empowers communities with the skills and tools needed to rebuild their lives and economies. In 2013, VCI initiated a strategic planning process to guide its growth and impact. A multi-stakeholder workshop held in Nairobi brought together board members, staff, partners, and donors to shape the 2014–2018 Strategic Plan. This plan defined VCI’s identity, strategic direction, and operational framework, and remains a dynamic document subject to ongoing review and adaptation. ?️ Programmatic Focus VCI’s core sectors include: Health and Nutrition Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Food Security and Livelihoods Conflict Resolution Institutional Building These programs are designed to address both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term development goals. VCI integrates cross-cutting themes such as community participation, capacity building, and sustainability into all its interventions. ? Strategic Approach VCI combines grassroots engagement with policy advocacy, working across urban and rural settings to ensure equitable access to services. Its strategy emphasizes: Community-driven solutions Strategic partnerships Evidence-based planning Continuous monitoring and evaluation Scalable models for resilience and peacebuilding ? Looking Ahead VCI envisions expanding its impact across the Greater Horn of Africa, scaling up successful models and deepening its engagement with marginalized communities. Guided by its mission and values, VCI remains committed to fostering inclusive development, strengthening institutions, and building a future where Somali and regional communities thrive.
